What Are Leggings?
Leggings are slim-fitting pull-on pants made of stretchy materials that stay on with an elastic waistband rather than zippers or buttons. Leggings come in many styles, from faux-leather moto leggings for a night out to athletic pairs featuring sweat-wicking and flexible materials for yoga or other activities. Leggings come in thick jersey or Ponte and luxe fabrics like velvet, suede, or leather. Some leggings imitate classic pants styles, such as jeggings—a cross between leggings and denim jeans—or leather leggings. Most leggings fall to the ankle, but some fall mid-calf or knee-length.
Don’t wear leggings that are too tight or too loose. Your leggings should be tight enough to snugly cover your legs, but not so tight that people can see every dimple in your legs. Make sure that they aren’t so loose that they start to bunch over your legs, because that isn’t very flattering either. You’ll find ones that fit well not only look better, but feel more comfortable. Though anyone can wear leather leggings, they tend to be unforgiving and can bunch and cause unflattering lines on some body types.
Go for an athleisure look. Style leggings for a comfortable and sporty athleisure look. Brightly colored leggings or printed leggings are standard in workout wear; style a simple white tee or short top with cropped leggings or match high-waist leggings with a patterned sports bra in warmer months. Wear a full-length pair of leggings with a long sleeve shirt and hoodie in the winter.
Leggings are pants, essentially. Some believe this not to be the case, and they are entitled to their opinion. You can comfortably step out of the house wearing pants and a shirt, as you can do the same with leggings, if you like. As long as you won’t be revealing too much, wear what you wish. Pair leggings with a longer top or jacket. Even if the shirt hits below your butt, you’ll still look like you stepped out of the house without putting everything on. Wear your leggings with a dress, a skirt, or even shorts.
